Mountainview Jams is an bi-monthly open mic event that happens in the Appalachian Dining Hall at Binghamton University. This event is meant to cultivate a community of student musicians and showcase their work not only to the campus but online as well. As a media intern of three years, I was tasked with photographing the musicians, creating social media graphics, and highlight reels to share online.
Initially, I worked using similar themes on the Jams’ existing social media platforms, but as I continued learning graphic design at school, I began to implement a stricter brand identity as time went on. Platforms such as Adobe Express and Canva have various colors and fonts to choose from, but I eventually decided to continue using the same typefaces to create a sense of familiarity, even if the graphics and layout changed.
I settled on Source Sans Pro for its thick line weight and modern feel, and Brevia for the body copy, as its rounded edges gave off a friendliness that the Jams were trying to associate with their brand. I also eventually settled on a color palette of dark and light green, reminiscent of the Binghamton University colors, and a light and dark purple that complemented the colors and gave a bit more edge to the look.
Using Premiere Rush and Capcut, I was also able to make short highlight reels to share on social media. This was a way to showcase the student’s talent and have it be shareable across platforms.
